in the gathering of old men the theme to me seems to be change. so far in this book all i can see them talking about is the past. from when one of them was in the army and was told to take off the uniform he wore because he didnt deserve it.Or when when tucker talked about his brother silas; plus when they were all reminiscing they brought up nothing but troubles they had in the past.everyone around them say the times have change but not in their minds is my point because to them they still face the same kind of discrimination as they did before.

In the book Gathering of old Men the theme or moral that should be taken from the text is what goes around comes around and also a lesson of forgiveness. The old men in the book became one to stand up to descrimination. After being put through a corrupt system of slavery for many years the men sought for revenge. To back the first theme of what goes around comes around, in this book the men sought revenge to whom they were unjustly treated giving the man what he rightfully deserved. Also I beleive that a lesson of forgiveness should be taken out of this story. The problem in the story could have been avoided if the men dropped past feelings towards Beau. In a chinese proverb it say, "One who seeks vengeance must dig two graves: one for himself and one for his enemy." I beleive this directly applys to the story, If the men could simply avoid revenge they would be in no trouble.

I beleive the theme in A Gathering Of Old Men was Karma. I beleive this because Beau is a plantion owner and he treated his slaves unfairley. If i was treated the way they where i would stick up for whoever shot Beau regardless of who it was and what the consequences would be if Mapes actually thought i did it.

Theme

I believe that in "A Gathering of Old Men", the most prominent theme is that of Change. Throughout the book characters discuss what would and has happen. They talk of things of the past, and expect those things to stay constant, only to be proven wrong. They all talk of past grievances and misdeeds done to them. Everyone, including Fix, expects fix to go down to Marshall with a mob to kill the person who murdered his son. Instead, he stays home for the sake of his other son. The people in this book dwell on the racist past, but the past changed.

In 'A Gathering of Old Men' the major theme is accusing. When they found out that Mathu killed Beau, Candy had Snookum go and tell the old men to get their guns and meet at Mathu's house. Candy says, "I want you to run, and I don't want you to stop running. I want you to go tell Rufe and Reverend Jameson and Corrine and the rest of them to gather at Mathu's house right away"(5). She did this so that Mapes couldn't just accuse him of killing Beau. She made it more of a fair trial. Also, when Mapes thought he had it all figured out uncle Billy admitted to killing Beau after Mapes accused Mathu. He puts it as "How come you so far from home, Uncle Billy?" Mapes asked him. 'I kilt him,' the old man said, without raising his eyes from Mapes's chest. His bald head never stopped bobbing"(67). Mapes accuses and he thinks he knows what happened and who did what. That is why the main theme is accusing.

The most prominent theme in the book is blame. The theme is blame because when Mathu killed Beau Candy took the blame. She called around to have all these men in the local are or county to come in to say they all shot this one man but only one bullet is in him. These other men come around to take the blame for something they didnt do which is killed another man. Sense they are taking blame for something they didnt do the cops or Fix does something about it or try to. I dont think the guys have any idea what they got themselves into without knowing the whhole story which probably come back on them as all of them going to jail or killed. The rascism was harse at this time also so most likely bad things will happen to all of these men. But i believe the truth will come out and no blame will be said anymore.
